1. The Killing of a Sacred Deer
   
   You know it's something special when there's virtually zero acting and you still can't take your eyes (and ears) off it. How did Yorgos Lanthimos go from The Lobster to this?
   
   
2. Dunkirk
   
   Gospel truth: Christopher Nolan works on a different planet. There are a few things you can nitpick here, but in its entirety it's a masterpiece. Just the fact that a genre film succeeded outside its conventions is enough to end debates.
    
3. Get Out
   
   Everything this touches turns to gold. Suspense, check. Humour, check. Intelligence, check. Flawless, not just for a debut director, but any director.
    
4. Blank 13
   
   Touching and funny, never have I seen a film take a 180-degree change in tone and still works.
    
5. The Square
   
   Films that make you uncomfortable are usually good films. This pummels you until you want to slit your throat, while offering a cutting critique of so many issues I shan't list them.
    
6. Logan
   
   A superhero movie like no other. Compelling characters, gritty action, utterly depressing.
    
7. No Date, No Signature
   
   Like most great Iranian films, an intriguing premise laced with social commentary. Nobody does hopelessness like Iran.
    
8. 分贝人生
   
   A poor and dysfunctional Chinese family in Malaysia. And it gets worse. A tragic story through and through.
    
9. The Big Sick
   
   They don't do rom-coms like this anymore. A good romance doesn't have to be smart; a smart film rarely pairs with a good love story. This picture achieves all these and much more.
    
10. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
    
    I have to save a spot for this. Simply helming a project like this and not messing up is an achievement.

over and over, Episode 8 preaches hope and renewal. where JJ Abrams delivered fan service with Episode 7, Rian Johnson nudges traditionalists in a new direction.

let go of the past and the three original heroes. Jedi or no Jedi, hope does not die.

it is a plot yet also a message to fans.

the greatness of Episode 8 is not a rebirth that promises great future films. they might not, they might suck. the true greatness of Episode 8 is giving you hope about future films, and sometimes, hope itself is enough.

Increase the supply and the demand will follow.

The Boxer 20th anniversary

20 years ago this month. a film that tackles and works on so many levels -- a man turning over a new leaf, the Northern Ireland conflict, boxing, love. also when DDL starting to make his mark.

Wall Street 30th anniversary

30 years ago this month. the original capitalism film.

i was an early champion of Mkhitaryan, but what the hell is happening to him? from a world beater to a passenger -- this is a curse that's befallen many. United seem to be a club that can buy either established players who have Premier League experience or foreign youngsters to groom, but never established players who have no Premier League experience. did a quick check for players who joined from major clubs/leagues aged at least 24, and since the Premier League began in 1992, here's the scorecard:

it's clear several of the successes succeeded because they joined in the twilight of their careers and were thus savvy enough. the common thread for the flops is they did have outstanding games, but capitulated uglily. Mkhitaryan is seemingly on the verge.

USA v. Trump

20 years ago this month. give some filmmakers a glorious subject matter and they can screw it up. give a 27-year-old PTA one as difficult as this and he produces what remains one of the most engaging films i've seen. not to mention Heather Graham, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, Burt Reynolds, Don Cheadle, John C Reilly, William H Macy, Luis Guzman and Alfred Molina!

went to 追龙 only for its re-creation of Kowloon Walled City. turned out better than expected. didn't expect 王晶 to write characters as complex and grey as the two leads. his overall editing and screenplay however can do with more - pardon the cliché - "breathing space".

life is an endless series of trainwrecks with only brief commercial-like breaks of happiness.

old age and treachery will always beat youth and exuberance.

Today in 90 minutes this dude argued how much better it is to suffer Total Permanent Disability with his company than with others, that their advice a few months ago turned out wrong because it's "just advice", how dishonest OCBC 360 is, how my current portfolio is the reason his industry has a bad name, how apocalyptic the world and markets are right now, and who knows where our CPF money is.

in its purest, Dunkirk is not a war drama but a study on perspectives. it also curiously succeeds at creating stirring characters in a story not driven by characters.

看了《龙眼粥》，讲述能梦到一张没见过却又很清楚的脸，一直觉得这种情节特别荒谬。

当晚就梦到很久没见而开始模糊的 Sze Ee，但突然很清楚，已忘了的主题曲也突然播起。

rewatched The Departed. clinical adaptation with strokes of Scorsese. very accomplished technically and well adapted to Boston, but still jarring. Hong Kong film tropes just don't work here. it's one film that however Western critics praise, will never be on par with the original. check out Black Mass for a more frightening Irish Mob.

i like motion pictures

Singapore makes either commercial films that appeal to the mainstream audience or art films that are indulgent and unpolished. granted, A Yellow Bird is not for the general public (yet), but it could be the watershed event that gives 'arthouse' a good name here. we may not yet have a commercial work that comes close to Hollywood and Hong Kong, but we now have a product that in my reckoning can rival anything on the festival circuit. K Rajagopal is a hidden gem.

i like motion pictures

is faith another word for arrogance? aren't morals more important than any God? Silence is a profound and contemplative film. like faith, it frustrates you. like faith, you experience it but get no answers from Scorsese. the film has a strong third act but i think the genius is in one constant subplot. and even in depicting Japan's persecution it never characterises it as good (Christianity) versus evil nor villifies the Japanese. and i would have never guessed the meaning of the film's powerful title. #OscarsSoWhiteBlack that Issey Ogata, the best thing in Silence, wasn't nominated.

Oscars 2017: who should win

Best Picture - Arrival, for being a transcendent film. La La Land, a very good film, would be deserving too. i totally didn't get Moonlight.

Best Director - Damien Chazelle is fully deserving if he wins. there were so many things happening in La La Land it's hard to question his brilliance. but Denis Villeneuve is his equal, while Mel Gibson directed some of the greatest war scenes ever in Hacksaw Ridge.

Best Actor - Denzel Washington in a weak field. his role is an awards bait. Andrew Garfield deserves credit for an eye-catching performance. i wasn't won over by Casey Affleck, Viggo Mortensen didn't do much behind those facial hair, and Ryan Gosling was just Ryan Gosling.

Best Actress - based on performance, Meryl Streep -- and Isabelle Huppert close behind. based on buzz, Emma Stone. Natalie Portman was underwhelming and Ruth Negga was average.

Best Supporting Actor - Jeff Bridges or Michael Shannon (shame about Aaron Taylor-Johnson). i love Mahershala Ali but he barely appeared. Dev Patel is overrated.

Best Supporting Actress - Viola Davis is too strong here, although i really enjoyed Michelle Williams' and Nicole Kidman's performances.

Best Cinematography - Silence, Lion and La La Land had nice shots periodically but Arrival was the most consistently auteurist whose cinematography was a key element of its success. Moonlight is a close second.

Best Original Screenplay - gonna play devil's advocate here and say i enjoyed the writing of the four others more than La La Land. Hell or High Water or The Lobster for me.

Best Adapted Screenplay - i didn't enjoy Moonlight but it's a fine piece of art. Hidden Figures and Lion had strong source material, Arrival was a victory of direction more than writing, and Fences was simply a play plastered on screen.

Leicester sacked the manager who pulled off not just their greatest achievement, but the greatest feat in sports. now move on. i don't completely agree with the criticism. it's not like the club will forget him. they'll still build him the statue. critics say he's earned immunity. those critics don't acknowledge he's facing relegation with pretty much the same squad. that's a major step backwards. should the owners watch the club relegate and bask in the past?

there are many things about the American political system that are complex yet sensible. the one thing i don't get is why Supreme Court justices can be left or right and affect the appointments. yes humans have ideologies but shouldn't the judicial branch be impartial?

it's easy to see why La La Land is an awards-season darling - it's about Hollywood, it's a musical, it has two likeable leads, it's Damien Chazelle, and it has one of those popular open-ended alternate-reality life-has-no-happy-endings endings. you already know what's great about it so here's what i think isn't: it can't seem to decide whether it's a musical or not; Gosling, as compared to Stone; the romance builds up a little too quick; Sebastian's plotline breaks apart and suddenly returns as knight in shining armour; some nice shots but not Oscar-worthy cinematography. La La Land is an intriguing film, but it is not a GOAT film.

i like motion pictures

Arrival is a sci-fi film you wouldn't associate with sci-fi. it's basically a simpler, tighter version of Interstellar. if you found Interstellar convoluted, this would be perfect. if you found Interstellar reasonable, this would be superficial. like his previous Sicario, Denis Villeneuve is a genius. very few filmmakers who can take this genre without turning it cheesy.
