a Manchester curse

i was an early champion of Mkhitaryan, but what the hell is happening to him? from a world beater to a passenger -- this is a curse that's befallen many. United seem to be a club that can buy either established players who have Premier League experience or foreign youngsters to groom, but never established players who have no Premier League experience. did a quick check for players who joined from major clubs/leagues aged at least 24, and since the Premier League began in 1992, here's the scorecard:

flop: Poborsky, Blomqvist, Taibi, Veron, Kleberson, Hargreaves, Kagawa, Falcao, Di Maria, Valdes, Schweinsteiger, Darmian

verdict still out: Rojo, Blind

success: Barthez, Blanc, Heinze, Evra, Van der Sar, Larsson, Herrera, Romero, Ibrahimovic

it's clear several of the successes succeeded because they joined in the twilight of their careers and were thus savvy enough. the common thread for the flops is they did have outstanding games, but capitulated uglily. Mkhitaryan is seemingly on the verge.

USA v. Trump

Mueller's so-called all-star team leaked their first charges before the weekend, let it simmer below the White House, then charged Trump's campaign chief on the first workday on a bunch of non-Trump-related crimes.

It successfully baited the White House to dismiss the developments, before Mueller immediately dropped an enough-known advisor's conviction for Russia-related crimes, sending the White House into a tailspin.

Without speaking to Trump or the media, Mueller sent a loud and clear message that he can flip people like Papadopoulos and, if you don't cooperate like Manafort, he'll clobber you on other counts.

If there's a masterclass in law enforcement, we're seeing it in real time. This is far from over.
