what exactly do u yearn for more n how exactly are u gonna do it?
Man Utd were only 3 points ahead, albeit w a much superior goal difference, n this was a potential 6-pointer. w only 2 matches left after this, this match could decide e title. it is tt close, if Fergie hasnt realised. so it is a big match, even if it is stuck btwn e two legs of e Champions' League semi-final. n Fergie seemed to not have realised tt e opponents Chelsea are in a similar position. they have tt front to fight as well in afew days, against Liverpool. both teams r in this shit together lah, please. so we're at e business end of e season. n it's e time when real men stand up n be counted. players live for n thrive in this. tts e difference btwn e two teams this time.
Chelsea, without regards for e comin fixtures, understand tt all their top players have to feature now. they fielded their strongest team (unless u consider Florent Malouda first-team), w e exception of a stricken Frank Lampard (n yes without such a key player, no offence to e Lampard family, United still did not capitalise). with Stamford Bridge, e formidable Bridge, unbeaten in 100 matches since February 2004, as e setting, Man Utd did e inexplicable. Phenomenon Cristiano Ronaldo, together with Patrice Evra and Carlos Tevez, were rested. those 3 can already be considered e main reasons for United's amazing season. what were Mikael Silvestre, Darren Fletcher and Nani doin in e line-up?
Chelsea looked snarling in defence, powerful n efficient in midfield w Michael Essien and Jon Obi Mikel holdin forte, n inspired in attack. Man Utd went for a sole striker n played like its offence was havin a try-out in training. Nani was so bad he was almost detrimental to United. Wayne Rooney has v much shown this season tt he cannot single-handedly win a game for United without e support of his star colleagues like Ronaldo and Tevez. so u let him lead e line alone? Fletcher, whom i like, was given a run-out, but against e illustrious Chelsea midfield? oh come on.
i guess Fergie brought club captain Ryan Giggs back to control e game for us in e absence of players like Ronaldo and Paul Scholes. but Giggs is seriously declinin n this match he was always a yard short n a second slower, n failed to make any meaningful impact. these few weeks him n Scholes have really deteriorated a lot, to an extent tt i haven before seen, n im startin to believe their time is almost up. u see this isnt prejudgment. ive followed e club for 12 years n these two are e icons of this generation. they've performed at such high levels for more than a decade tt many times there were hints of decline. critics wait to catch em off-form n say tt they're burnt out. but they came back stronger. this time age has really played its part.
they have reinvented emselves over e years. Scholes was more known for his late bursts into e area, threat from e midfield hole, n blistering shots from far. as he aged n became slower to contribute w goals, he concentrated on his other weapon - passing. forgive me for being a Scholes diehard fan, but watch him, i dare say his range of passing n passing abilities are one of, if not e best in e world. as years passed, he fell back abit deeper to collect e ball, to have a bigger impact on matches in terms of controllin e tempo. this magnified his game-reading skills.
Giggs' main weapons in his heyday (n there are afew actually) were a dribbling style combined w speed n change of pace, plus a mean crossing ability. he reminded ppl of e legendary George Best, n tts a scary thought in itself. ppl could not handle Best, n they cldnt handle Giggs as well. but thing is, Giggs' dribbling is largely effective only when he's comin fast at u. v different school of dribbling from masters like Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldinho, or even Joe Cole. he aged, n he got slower. he could no longer burn fullbacks. so he reinvented himself. for his heyday #2, he went higher up e wing, so he did not have to run as far to take on defenders. he depended more on delivering good crosses now. it reduced his dynamism, but to complete this heyday #2, he utilised fully another weapon of his - an amazing ball control. this aspect distinguishes Giggs from many other professionals in e English league. he has great understanding of e ball n can make it stick to him naturally. he's slower, so he cant keep holdin e ball anymore, so he shall use his ball control to e fullest n play others on. he became a focal point for most of Man Utd's lightning-quick attacks, integrating his vision n passing into e moves. so u have a player tactically n technically gifted. n Giggs has e added advantage as he struck fear into opponents. they know even if they can catch him or stop him, what he can do w a ball can still settle games. this coincided w him movin more infield, becomin more involved in plays. heyday #3 is even more high-profile than #2, n is e period stretchin into present day. this was when he has reached a certain level of maturity n experience, n could affect outcomes of matches by simply being on e field. this coincided w him being made captain of United and Wales. w tt ball control, vision, n game-reading skills, plus a more centralised position, he now hold extensive influence in matches. he sometimes can even impose this on match officials, who respect him for his accolades n discipline in an illustrious career.
but like i mentioned earlier, Scholes and Giggs have really aged n i dont believe they can go on for v long more. Giggs will want to break Sir Bobby Charlton's appearance record, but Scholes may be contemplatin retirement.
e central defensive partnership was first choice, if tt was any consolation. but when Nemanja Vidic left e field before even e quarter-hour mark, Wes Brown slotted inside n Owen Hargreaves filled rightback, n it was Barcelona again. just tt this time at leftback was e inferior Silvestre. suddenly e team looked weak.
w 25mins still remainin, against e late-late-show team of England, Fergie committed e amateur mistake of going in retreat, bringin in John O'Shea for e outstandin Anderson. n let e powerful opponents come at em. Fergie really should know better. this was Stamford Bridge n as such a reputable club we should have gone at em. maybe he was encouraged by what happened at Nou Camp. he seemed especially proud of tt, while fans didnt.
Chelsea were not afraid n threw on Nicolas Anelka, Andriy Shevchenko, n almost Juliano Belletti to pile on e pressure offensively. so away team went reverse n home team went forward. no contest. when barrage n barrage of attacks on United's goal seemed futile n Drogba, Anelka n Cole especially quiet, it took a dubious penalty to confirm tt Chelsea always score at home.

Barcelona 0-0 Manchester United
give Barcelona some credit. e papers have mostly been centring ard how Fergie planned n went out to choke e opponents, n totally gave up any intentions to attack. some ppl have commented tt Manchester United looked Italian n played like catenaccio. near, but if u analysed e match closely, United were kept out of havin a go at Barcelona, by Barcelona.
this is Man Utd. a team tt prides on possession play, swift killer blows, n swaggers ard pitch. even when they're down against top teams, they usually dominate possession til e final whistle. it is how Fergie learnt football should be played, n what he passed on to his old guard, who then impose it on e newer generations. this season, they've perfected e art. remember 5-1 Newcastle, 6-0 Newcastle, n 3-0 Liverpool? these are reputable opponents who are supposed to be close in quality to United. but if u had been living on another planet n only watched these matches, u would have thot tt Newcastle and Liverpool are in a different league from United. such was e Red Devils' domination of e matches, n how they smothered e ball ard e field like e opponents wernt there. they easily stringed together 20-odd-pass sequences in e closing stages of e matches.
n at Nou Camp, e final possession count read only 27% to United. please do not say it was just Fergie's conservative tactics. this team is built to be arrogant. but Barcelona controlled e tempo of e match thruout n didnt allow United to play.
e line-ups did not say much. Barcelona preferred a single out-n-out striker in Samuel Eto'o, but e attackin nature of e team was obvious. Lionel Messi returned, n e midfield also boasted Deco n Andres Iniesta. only a fool would think this was a cautious line-up. durin Barca's all-conquerin days of 2006, their irrepressible midfield was e crux of their offense, when they worked as a unit to dismantle oppositions. in fact, Man Utd's line-up also looked fine. Paul Scholes n Michael Carrick continued their reliable partnership in e middle of e park (although some believe Owen Hargreaves and Anderson are more continental and hence more suited), n e only notable change was Park Ji-Sung's run-out over club captain Ryan Giggs, who was ready on e bench.
but from e whistle go, some things became obvious. winger Cristiano Ronaldo has been allocated as sole striker, much owing to his goal-scoring record this season; Carlos Tevez fell deep, while Wayne Rooney went out right. Scholes, usually the perfect fold for Carrick, was given similar duties as e latter, to sit in front of e defence as e second anchorman. there were many question marks over e strategy of Fergie. why was Scholes, infamous for his lack of tacklin skills, used as a destroyer n restrained from what he does best, in e attackin midfield hole? by joinin Carrick, we can see clearly Fergie's defensive approach. why was Rooney used out right when he's an instinctive striker but lacks flair? Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was experimented before by Fergie to be moved out to e wing, but he succeeded to an extent as Solskjaer played simple, direct wingplay, and he had pace n a fair amount of flair. Rooney was almost invisible whole night n did not excite e Catalan crowd, a letdown to e hype ard him, as compared to Messi, Bojan Krkic or Geovanni. e choice of Ronaldo upfront was simple math - 38-goal return, n this man would give e Barca defence something to think abt whole night. but wrong. Ronaldo is best maraudin from deep, in momentum n in full flow. he cant wait. hes not a natural striker, but more a forward. n as a forward, he needs someone to complement him, all season being Rooney. so this night, he only succeeded in scarin e Barca defence, but there was only so much he could do.
i would have to admit United were astute in defending n one could easily see tt their main duties for e night were defensive. Barca controlled e match. basically e scenes were repeated. Deco or Xavi would control e tempo, decide e next move, n start playin. Messi, Iniesta and Eto'o would usually get e ball, n try to work something out. Man Utd sat back. when e time was ripe, Scholes or Carrick or Evra or Hargreaves would stick in to make e tackle. if at best, Barcelona made it to e last line, Rio Ferdinand would blast e ball away into safety. Rooney, Tevez and Park did their part by harryin opponents from e midfield region. if United did get e ball under control, they would give it to Scholes, Carrick, Rooney or Tevez. unfortunately, this was e main disappointment of e night for United. usually so adept at it, Barcelona's close attention left Scholes, Carrick and Rooney dead most of e time, 3 players who arnt exactly good in tight situations. so e ball is lost n returned to Yaya Toure, e main destroyer for Barcelona. in essence, there was no link-up to Ronaldo, let alone threats to e Barca goal. but if one does not consider Man Utd as Man Utd this night, it was an exceptional defensive display.
maybe he was being cautious in such a cauldron, but definitely not negative. Ronaldo might have been moved inside as a tactical change; Eric Abidal or Gianluca Zambrotta are two of e best at fullback. but no, w e confidence of Fergie in Ronaldo this season, i dont think he would think tt way. Rooney? i felt tt he was played simply bcoz he's Rooney. Fergie has to choose e best team for e occasion, not e best individuals. other than his lung-bursting defensive contributions, his selection was off.
however, this match was for e taking, if Fergie hadnt realised. Barcelona was in a slump. they're not e team of before. not tt team tt passed ard so lightning-quick like only vintage Arsenal can. n Nou Camp hasnt been tt formidable this season. well, we can only understand tt maybe it was Fergie's experience, tt u must always show respect to e biggest clubs of e world. maybe coz Champions' League semi-final is just too huge. maybe he has last season's football lesson by AC Milan at e back of his head. but if he had dared n allowed us fans to dream, he would have taken e game to Barca, n there could yet be a better result.
make no mistake. conceding nothing at Nou Camp is an achievement in itself. tt was most prob e idea in Fergie's head when plannin his strategy. but this is a two-legged affair. u bring e opponents home w a 0-0 aggregate, means u have to do better than e 1st leg to win e tie. once they score at Old Trafford, u have to beat em, bcoz a scoring draw n ur out. Old Trafford is e Theatre of Dreams, but it still cannot claim to be a fortress like Anfield, Stamford Bridge or San Siro. essentially in this tie, it doesn matter much who has home advantage. when Barcelona come by, please watch out. they are a team tt can score in any ground in e world. we'll have to control n dominate, but not slip up behind to an early Barca goal. n we've never needed e Old Trafford crowd more than now.
this is Man Utd. a team tt prides on possession play, swift killer blows, n swaggers ard pitch. even when they're down against top teams, they usually dominate possession til e final whistle. it is how Fergie learnt football should be played, n what he passed on to his old guard, who then impose it on e newer generations. this season, they've perfected e art. remember 5-1 Newcastle, 6-0 Newcastle, n 3-0 Liverpool? these are reputable opponents who are supposed to be close in quality to United. but if u had been living on another planet n only watched these matches, u would have thot tt Newcastle and Liverpool are in a different league from United. such was e Red Devils' domination of e matches, n how they smothered e ball ard e field like e opponents wernt there. they easily stringed together 20-odd-pass sequences in e closing stages of e matches.

unbelievable? believe it.
u are an arts-inclined person, or a conditions-manipulated science student whos more interested in social science than genes n Newton. n ur intrigued by e media, so much so tt ur willin to deviate frm e path of riches of engineerin or accountin. be different, u insisted. u gave ur best shot for a place in e elite communications school in asia. u get it. for ur place, 4 others were rejected. media. film, journalism, tv, magazines, adverts, public relations, radio. screw e engine n calculations.
along e way, u meet an unfamiliar but fearsome foe.
its inexplicable how Statistics managed to sneak into our coursework.
hello. last time i saw numbers n when 1 only equaled 1 n 2 stayed as 2 (which isnt e case in arts) was 2002 olevel a'math. i tried tutorin lower sec math but i stumbled aplenty along e experience.
imagine e panic when ur world becomes one where yes can only be yes n u cant argue til its a no. so i gotta mug. really mug. e kind u crash ur head w facts.
trust me. ppl were clueless. even for e supposedly and arguably intellectual population (this is a dirty word now) of WKWSCI. when a tough course comes along, ppl seek answers. but at least w smart questions lah. Stats, ppl were askin dumb questions. no one was afraid. coz anyway it seemed like no one got it. e questions seemed dumb, but not many could understand em too anyway.
theres a serious problem, n proof tt mass comm students sldnt be takin Stats, when 90% of e cohort, three weeks into it, say Chee-square/Chai-square/Kee-square instead of Kai-square.

e gender confusion
i admire what shixiong said e other day while in a girl's car. at times it was chauvinistic, i admit. but i admired his assertiveness. we got caught in some gender stereotypin, n shixiong was blunt in his message. "what gender equality do females want, if, as and when they like, they're proponents of double standards themselves?" -in response to driver's displeasure at chauffeuring us, and tt guys sld chauffeur girls. (shixiong was especially offended as he had once went out of his way to chauffeur her to n fro her house to help her retrieve sth impt.) he had no shame.
instead, e assertiveness shone thru to me. im one who always preach to my male friends tt a rship is 2-way, n guys sld never always give in. we have to love ourselves juz like we know girls love themselves alot. indeed, i know of many girls who dun want at-ur-service guys. only when u can cherish urself, will u be able to cherish ur partner better.
do spore women expect too much? (ST, 24/2/08) by a female journalist
women's expectations of their male dates are more like they're going out with Prince Charming than a real, live man. such mindsets and expectations set the feminist movement back 50 years.
"some women are hypocritical as they demand to be taken seriously and treated equally, but when it comes to dating etiquette, they expect their boyfriends to attend to their every need", female, senior marketin n communications consultant
"women set standards selectively. in certain areas, they want us to perform to their expectations. yet at other times, they want to have their say. they are sending mixed signals and they confuse us sometimes", male
"if you expect the man to accept you as his equal, you can't also expect him to run around treating you like a porcelain doll on a pedestal. it just does not make sense in our modern world", female
"singaporean women should take time off to reflect upon themselves and see how they can meet men's expectations", female, dating agency's founder
"how do these women expect to be taken seriously or seen as an equal? if it makes your man happy to do these things, it's perfectly ok to let him. but we set ourselves up for failure and disappointment when we put pressure on the opposite sex to do all the things that we're perfectly capable of doing", female, image consultant
hey. truth is. guys have no qualms openin doors for u, payin for things, or carryin ur stuff. but it comes from e heart. if these become 'expected', then it's a chore n we're turned off. dun be offended juz bcoz ur a female lah. as e New woman, u sld know there are hypocritical females out there. if ur not one, ur not one. look at this w an open mind. girls juz wanna be loved. we know it, please. it's juz sickenin when u fight tooth n nail w us abt equality, n nxt moment hypocritically - n w a swing of ur hair - expect us to serve u. please, this is not an MCP post.

e first step is finally taken
today can be considered a milestone in my 舞狮 career.
(decided to use Chinese for some of e terms coz i realised some things cant be expressed in English, esp w regards to such Chinese material)
it's been almost 4 years since i was under e tutelage of anyone in this arena. when i graduated from 南初国术团 in May 2004, it was e last time i was a disciple. of course, u may argue, 一日为师 终生为父. i will never forget tt. Loy Kee Fatt is always my 师父. but being under someone, in the present tense, was a thing of e past. after May 2004, im officially a graduate of the troupe. essentially tt means i dun report to tt 师父 of mine anymore. me n e few active alumni still go to him for advice n knowledge, but it's on an ad-hoc basis. we dun even follow his strict regime anymore, not like he insists. we go back to help out w e 师弟师妹 regularly, but we're on our own. we go out n meet more people. we learn more things than he can provide us within e troupe. we got to know other 师父 (whom are usually referred to as 教练 as they're not related to us), n learn more, n improvise e different aspects of e various 门派. but it was all on an unofficial basis.
so tt's e problem. we slack off in e foundation skills. when we're under a tough n disciplined environment, we were noobs. when we go out into e world, we lose e discipline unfortunately. technically we may have improved thru e years, from more exposure n experience. but it's a combination of both tt brings out e best in us.
i was nervous. today wasnt just any other usual training. adrian convinced a 3rd-generation master, 黄师父 from 鹤山会馆, to become our 师父, 顾问, n choreographer to help w our virgin attempt at the Nationals (全国舞狮锦标). this 前辈 is in his 60s, n belongs to the last generation of old-school masters who are equally, n proficiently so, adept at 舞狮, 武术, n many other Chinese cultural elements. from the 4th-generation onwards, like my original 师父, practitioners become more specialised, n also less inclined towards e 传统, v much due to e advent of 舞龙 n 跳桩. w so many troupes springin up, many ridiculously, e standards n adherence dropped. procedures of representative practises like 采青 became distorted n tradition went downhill. even e Nationals lost its soul n judges now look out more for death-defying stunts than 狮形 n 含义. 黄师父 has been in this circle since e year Singapore became independent. he's seen all e shifts. he should know. he's so senior tt he has even retired as a judge for e Nationals. today, he advises many troupes, some highly reputable. w his experience he has moulded champion teams. he has taught people how to become champions, but he hasnt lost his religious following of e traditional. he draws a clear line between competition requirements n e practises. w e former, he has moved w e times, but w e latter, he's still stubbornly adamant, which is a good thing. he is extremely glad we're an interested bunch, n arnt some idling delinquents, tt's why he's willing to pass on his knowledge n help us without conditions.
it's a milestone bcoz it's been a long time since i was so regimental. i was ramrod straight while he talked to us. we were in awe of his presence. we stood around him like he's a giant. well, he is, figuratively. we greeted him 师父, n later bade farewell to him w e classic 解散 salute. we're of different schools of e art. he's a master in 鹤山派狮, while we're cross-trained in his niche n 佛鹤派狮, so we had to adapt to him. this is of course not easy. when we reached e moment to show him what we've got, we went silent. this was it. jiajun went 1st as he's our choice of 狮头 for e competition. i could see he moved up a level from his usual performance, as he had to display his best. but still he was put down, bcoz jiajun isnt drilled in the foundations like we were, so he is bound to be lacking. adrian volunteered himself next, to break e ice in a way, bcoz he had trained under 黄师父 at 鹤山会馆 before. he also displayed his best, n was considerably up to his standards. n when 黄师父 asked who's e drummer, i felt a nervy tinge up my spine as they pointed at me. i was a much better drummer some years back, when i practised consistently. but e me today is just stable n nothing spectacular. so i went up to e drum n did my thing. haven felt so nervous in a long time, not even w public performances, bcoz a master was eyeing me now. lucky in 鹤山鼓典 a traditional approach is favored, so i could still revert to it being once trained in traditional 南鼓.
i was all prepared to 扎马 or practise 狮形 for hours today, which is back-breakin for rusty practitioners like us. he did mention a faithfulness to 马步, but today was just an introduction, n he left in a little more than an hour.
back to basics. what more to come in e comin months leadin to e Nationals. but im exhilarated to be gettin in touch w these forgotten things again. they'll only make me better. it is our greatest honor to learn from him. in practice n theory, he has literacy not many others have anymore.

Australian Open round-up
the first tennis Grand Slam of the year. i like it bcoz it is usually here tt e pace for e year is set. tennis takes a break in e months after the Flushing Meadows in e US Grand Slam, so players are refreshed for e new season. n it is always here tt we're reminded of e legendary Rod Laver. n i simply like how bright this Grand Slam is, as it takes place in e dead heat of e Australian summer.
e only down point of this edition is tt e great Roger Federer, for all e fairytales we'd like to see, didnt win.
this year sees Rebound Ace replaced by Plexicushion. apparently, it's to combat e Australian heat, which makes Rebound Ace surfaces become sticky. Plexicushion offers more consistency under different conditions. but criticism is in e fact tt e new surface is v similar to e US Open's DecoTurf. e four Grand Slams are such bcoz they differ in surfaces n give players a larger challenge to complete The Grand Slam.
n boy was it a good tournament. tennis often sees upsets, n it's what makes e sport attractive. this time, there were more than enough of those.
as usual, e peerless Roger Federer and his nemesis Rafael Nadal were favourites. e world number one was being watched as he wasnt as prepared as e rest of e field. he was injured in e preparations n lead-up, n was playin in his first tournament of 2008. but critics know Federer loves e big occasions n would never write him off. as expected, he started slow n was pushed to e brink in e early stages, but he got stronger w each match. when e first real test came in James Blake, Federer responded wonderfully n destroyed e world number 12. Nadal, as expected, breezed thru to e semis. like how a commentator once astutely remarked, Nadal has a beastly determination n bags of skill to match. to beat him, u can only do so thru winners, bcoz he always try to giv u another ball to play.
e fairytale this time was a young Frenchman named Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. before this tournament ive seen him play. a competent lad, but rather ordinary. his weak links were his awkward build, movement around court, n technically not so consistent.
this unseeded player was expected to be brushed aside by e in-form Andy Murray. instead Tsonga turned in a brilliant display n took e match.
he was not done. he juz got better from tt point on n if "brilliant" was used to describe his last performance, then adjectives are fast runnin out. Tsonga came up against another in-form player, fellow Frenchman n backhand specialist Richard Gasquet. e match started off like a lesson in tennis for Tsonga from Gasquet, n we thot e end is oredi here for e young lad. but it juz got more even as time went by n servin even better tennis, Tsonga took e quarter-final n got himself a match in Nadal.
expectedly, e odds were heavily in e Spaniard's favor. no one gave Tsonga a chance. for all his youth, Nadal is equally young. in terms of talent, e world knows what Nadal can do. but it was a bad day for him. it was like a match-up planned by e gods. all possible strands of Nadal's weaknesses were met by all e possible strengths of Tsonga. it was like Tsonga was sent from above to specifically defeat this Spanish matador. e usual roles in Nadal's matches were reversed. Tsonga always gave Nadal another ball to play, n whatever Nadal threw at him, he had an answer. e powerful Spaniard was ran ragged n made a wimp by e awkward opponent. e crowds were exhilarated, although stunned tt this man, instead of e other, was in the final.
in e other pool, e rising star Novak Djokovic was tryin to move out of e shadows of e top two seeds. a key headline was given to him durin e tournament, n it signalled his arrival. e media related how a smooth n simple Djokovic totally dominated an exasperated former world number one n local favourite Lleyton Hewitt. Hewitt, famous for his grit, was runnin in circles against a young man who simply played his own game.
Djokovic and Nikolay Davydenko are juz some of e players in e world top 10 who struggle to ever beat Federer. watchers expected e same this time. Federer is in full swing, Australia is his traditional playground, n for all e skills tt e Serb has Federer can do better. unfortunate for e Swiss, Djokovic had a masterplan n he executed it perfectly.
u see, for havin e tag of e "most complete tennis player ever", Federer is not without weaknesses; they're juz too few n usually his brilliance would allow u no time to breathe.
these are e three, n maybe only, weaknesses of e great Swiss:
1. he starts matches slow, n if playin a top player, usually he would drop e first set. it is in e later sets when he would turn it on n opponents are blitzed.
2. his unbelievable game anticipation, strong consistent technical skills, n awesome court speed often conceals this characteristic of his. he is seldom tested n pushed to reveal his grit, hence tt works against him. he is not a player used to diggin deep. often when Federer loses, he does so meekly. of course, fans will always argue tt he is so brilliant tt he does not even need to dig deep.
3. if this is even a weakness at all, as it is so minute, Federer is weakest oncourt at e corner forehand. his forehand is excellent, no doubt, but it's e position he takes up oncourt n his habits tt make tt shot his Achilles Heel. when an opponent manages (extremely difficult in e first place) to hit a shot into tt zone, Federer usually nets it.
Djokovic sent Federer crashin out of a Grand Slam semi-final, the Swiss' first in eleven, by capitalisin on all e three points mentioned. n when ur of a standard of his, n also diverse in abilities (read: Nadal), victory's urs. Djokovic kept his composure n consistency thruout e match, without rushin anythin. at e same time, he piled on e pressure n stepped on e accelerator when necessary, allowin Federer no breathin space. thus e Swiss cld not up his game in e later stages. Djokovic knows technically he's no match of Federer, n only w determination n grit can he pull closer to e great man opposite. n he did it. lastly, Djokovic was astute n dogged, n played into e corner forehand zone time n time again, earnin himself many points thru Federer's unforced errors.
e final was an excitin prospect. not for skill levels, as spectators would mostly prefer at least havin Federer or Nadal. but for a new face winnin a Grand Slam. in one camp were e dreamers, hopin for a fairytale; in e other were those wishin e talented Djokovic, bound to go further in e future than Tsonga, would begin his journey of glory. to me, e Serb is borin n has no special weapons, juz good in every department, so i rooted for a fairytale endin. even e commentators seemed to be so. but alas, for all e magic Tsonga still managed to work n thrill us, Djokovic was too consistent.

concerns of my generation
i didnt expect a COM205 Speech & Argumentation class would open my eyes, subconsciously, to such a big nirvana quest. because e tutorial's about giving an informative speech about anythin we want, what people chose are intriguing and thought-provokin if u see deeper. as w class went on it just became more crystal (no pun on e chrystal in e class as well).
they revolved around, happiness, true beauty, and culture. in a class of 20, mind u. e biggest intricacy was how e session opened and closed. hanna kicked off with e speech "Female Circumcision: Female Genital Mutilation". angela was e last, after comin late and missing hanna's, with e speech "Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)".
(it was mainly this that made me blog this post)
i, in all my sophistication, spoke about Formula One.

27%
it's been a month since my last Speech lect. effectively i attended 2 of the 5 lects up til today. so i was guilty. so i planned to come. many people planned to come for tt sole reason.
but still they didnt.
when it started, with still a 15-min delay by LCW, there were 24 people. in a 200-seat LT.
in e end, 26 people attended. tt will account for 27% of e whole cohort.
ok "9-am girl" sheila jang arrived at 940, after e lect ended. this her only class of e day. so ok we have 26+1.

COM208, or what they call Communication Research
boring was e repeated term used to describe this rich but small division of WWKSCI. i thot how big can tt word be. u muz think so too. cmon, everyone used "boring" as CR's pet name, but this is mass comm n is tt e best n varied word everyone can find?
oh yea until im in it myself. i think ive found e right word for this course. boring.
should e course coordinator be more lively than e tutors? by experience maybe he knows how to make CR interestin. by superiority he could juz be e boring-est around.
ok so marko-gabriel skoric-grey sylar put me to sleep. n considerin im one of e toughest in class and most resilient to fallin asleep.
ok vivien chen came n put me to sleep.
my tutor terrie wong is nice, n im glad ive got her over e others. she didnt put me to sleep coz she openly admits CR is "quite boring". so i respect her for e honesty n humility. but she wanna put me to e sword for being 20mins late.
n why in e blue hell does CR have a whole foundation module devoted to it but not journ or EBM or PR or advertising?
some testimonies from my course mates~
"if i have nowhere to go except CR i'll quit school. i rather be a cashier", meisee
"if im forced to go CR i'll drop out of here. n go SIM", sara-jean
"208 SUCKKKKSSSS and i wanna drop it", waisze
"damn comm research", yanyi
"if i can only go CR i'll commit suicide", myself

Be Safe. Use Protection.
we almost forgot his 21st. ha. when we remembered, we gathered e 23-1 gang n stormed his room at 1+am. it caught him out. ha. then we proceeded to our usual chill/talkin cok/get-fat-w-midnite-snacks session.
of course, wat can 8 guys in an enclosed area talk abt. but girls. n w e natural cognitive link-up btwn "hall-living" n "girls", it was freakin funny talkin. nat mentioned we guys are always ready; even NTU promotes it. "they even gave us condoms in the freshman welcome gift wat. n i told leon, if he needs it, just come my table take."
we went silent. wat condoms?
it was hilarous lah. made our sides split. embarrassment slowly appeared on nat's face. he reached for e pack, n read its wordins agn.
Be Safe. Use Protection. for long lasting pleasure, anywhere, anytime! "you are out and about, relaxing, having fun when it happens in the heat of the moment. you may think putting it on is uncomfortable and takes all the fun out of it. but before you go bare, let NIVEA Sun tell you everything you need to know about sun protection." Warning: This product is not a method of contraception.
n he pulled out a bottle of sun lotion. then he screamed. hahaha. yes, tan kern bai.

a late observation
after NS, im a changed man. life stopped for 2 years. ok maybe not totally. i have to admit i learnt alot abt life durin those 2 years. but academic life did.
even before entering university, i cld already feel how studies will become important to me. although i started treatin studyin seriously since olevels, i only did e minimum to get where i am today. but this time, after e void, or hiatus, however u call it, i cld feel e rush n anticipatn. n it crystallised. i became a mugger, n im proud of it.
there are 4 kinds of students. e 1st, isnt exactly smart, n is lazy. many of my friends took tt path. e 2nd, is e born smart group. they proved genetics. they dun mug, or even study, but gets good results. e 3rd, is e true mugger, someone who is not naturally smart or sharp but mugs so much he can fly. e last, is e ultimate package. born smart n still mugs. those tt everyone is envious, respects, but hates.
in a place like whitley, u mug abit, u win. in nanyang, u mug abit, ur somewhere there. this is varsity level. its a mug craze. i tried my best. n ppl even commented i mug quite abit. but after these many weeks, i realised n noe now im not gonna get anywhere. at this level, ppl are far too smart. n ppl mug. so if u combine those 2, u get Exhibit 4.
it's too late to be a mugger now.

in a place like whitley, u mug abit, u win. in nanyang, u mug abit, ur somewhere there. this is varsity level. its a mug craze. i tried my best. n ppl even commented i mug quite abit. but after these many weeks, i realised n noe now im not gonna get anywhere. at this level, ppl are far too smart. n ppl mug. so if u combine those 2, u get Exhibit 4.
it's too late to be a mugger now.

perennial chokers
they have choked again.
all blacks 18-20 france.
im frustrated n angry. n i can feel it even in my bones. im sad, yes, but tts not e key emotion.
i noe ppl say it's just a game. but it isnt. it's not fanaticism as well, u see. im not a hardcore rugby fan. i do watch alot more than any ordinary folk, but definitely not as much as im a fan of soccer. but it's sth tt goes to e emotions. it affects u. deeply, in e veins. if ur a sports fan, ull understand.
u noe it's serious when u wake up e next day n e feelin stays w u. it's not e same when manchester united loses to a crap team. those days, i can read it. i can notice e usual flow isnt there. i can notice off-form players. i can notice a lack of heart. when they do lose, u dun see disappointment or regret. sometimes they seem so arrogant n narcissistic tt i'll be pissed how they can be so aloof to e poor showin. but it's different w e all blacks.
it's like. an all-conquering roger federer, sittin atop e tennis rankings since Feb 2004, chasin history, w only e clay French Open eludin him. movin into e Grand Slam, he snapped his main rival, claycourt kingpin rafael nadal's record winning streak on clay. he showed his class thru e French Open, reached e final, n then lost to nadal again. or. benfica inflictin a defeat on manchester united in e last group match of champions league 2005/06, e first time united failed to reach e knockout stages. those were e last times i felt this agonizing after-taste.
it is how everythin builds up. e expectations, e hype, n e history.
easily e greatest rugby team in e sports history. they're considered by almost all to be head n shoulders above e rest. it's as if rugby is e all blacks. e rest are there to chase after em. but, compared to michael schumacher, pete sampras, n liverpool, they do not have e records to show for it. tri-nations, six nations, or any other tours, or takin on other combined all-stars, e all blacks have performed like who they are. they do not just win. they mesmerise. n they walk over their opponents. but e blot is. they've actually not won e world cup since becomin inaugural champions in 1987. 20 whole years they've gone in as favourites. n they've choked.
this time, no different in reputation. an equally strong team compared w e past, w players who are e best in their positions on e globe. some critics even call e team e best ever. ull take note, considering greats like andrew mehrtens, jonah lomu, christian cullen, taine randell, jeff wilson, josh kronfeld, carlos spencer, justin marshall, kees meeuws, n tana umaga are no longer around. they have gone on a rampage under graham henry since 2003, immediately forgettin about e wound. not just were they winnin, they pulled away from their nearest rivals. jonny wilkinson hurt himself n england slumped; australia became a mess; france was in transition. their build-up to this world cup was excellent, most importantly without major disruptions on personnel.
ppl genuinely believed it's gonna be theirs after 20 years. but it was e case every edition. they come in, they sweep e group, then throw it away in e knockouts. e papers had it all. coverage n hype, over if they'll choke again. e match-up was 1999 replayed. france again. flashback, it was also a peerless all blacks against a talented but splutterin french. no one gave em much chance. n e kiwis led 24-10 in no time. but france pulled off one of e greatest turnarounds, scorin 33 points. how much will tt history influence e game? i thot it wont. e all blacks are too professional to be affected. france, supposedly a top 3 favourite of this edition but meekly succumbed to e argentinians on openin day, has gotten her groove back, though maybe not soon enough. e media played up e attention on e opposin hookers, anton oliver n rafael ibanez, legends in their own right, who featured in 1999. e french captain hoped e story will inspire his troops. oliver just wants to erase tt memory n set things right.
like '99, nth was in favor of france. they screwed up openin day's festivities in paris by losing a given. much like e soccer team's loss to senegal on openin day in 2002, when defendin e world cup. they're stylish n has home advantage, but critics pan they lack substance. man for man, they're in for a drubbin. e all blacks now boast e most powerful front row in world rugby; e french were never renowned for tt. serge betsen is a world class flanker, sebastien chabal is fearsome, but richie mccaw, jerry collins, rodney so'oialo, ali williams as e back row looks like an all-star selection. leon macdonald is capable n experienced; france is using an upstart for e critical fullback position. in midfield e experienced first-choice fullback mils muliaina n e talented luke mcalister do face a battle in world class centre yannick jauzion. all blacks' wings are try machines; france only has cedric heymans who is dangerous. in e inspirational position of flyhalf talented youngster lionel beauxis meets 2005 world player of e year daniel carter. only at scrumhalf are the french more equipped, jean-baptiste elissalde a rising star, e possessed byron kelleher just capable. but snarlin on e bench further are most-capped chris jack, record try-scorer doug howlett, underrated nick evans n top deputy kevan mealamu, players who can walk into any other international XV any day. e mercurial frederic michalak is no longer e same man, more erratic than inspirational nowadays. n betsen, one of france's great hopes, was injured 4mins into e match.
this then happened. muliaina n carter injured themselves durin e group stages, n wernt exactly fit for this match. their play showed flaws durin e games against e minor teams. apart from their near-perfect moves in other departments, they were losin too many balls. i was fearful tt france can expose this. n e commentator noted, v insightfully, tt up till now, e strongest test e all blacks have had was scotland, whom they beat 40-0. they not just have to peak now, they must have the fortitude to match a top-pooled country. n they cldnt.
after displayin to france how to play smooth, passin, magical rugby in e openin periods, goin 13-0 up, everythin crumbled in e 2nd half. mcalister got sinbinned, e kiwis were exposed all over, france gained confidence n momentum, ran riot over a panicky all blacks. as all these played out, n when e all blacks needed their best, carter, oliver, kelleher n then reserve flyhalf evans were all replaced. michalak came on, n w his first touch n burst he split e kiwis, n assisted e subsequent try. e all blacks were down. they pushed n pushed w pick-n-gos n in e dyin minutes sent a half-field crazy drop kick wide. before they, as predicted, got turned over in their last possession.
though not like '99, france knew they pulled off sth special. an at first straight-faced but now jubilant bernard laporte vs a proud but defeated henry. there were other lastin images. carter was tearin on e bench, w e veteran mealamu givin him a consolin pat. he knows he cld have done alot more. with near 700 points at only 25, his scorin was relatively low here. if he wasnt half-fit n had peaked, e team cld go all e way. he still has his future ahead, but this cld v well be e best chance he will have. collins, so'oialo, kelleher, mccaw, oliver gave their all, blood n sweat, n looked miserable at e end. it was more than just a game. to these maori warriors, they've let down others whom they fight for. they've let down e performance of e haka. more significantly, they've let e great opportunity to be inducted in history as a formidable force slip.

she against e giant
NTU Ministerial Forum 2007.
we actually got LKY this year. we're lucky, n it's surprisin. we all know his partiality towards Nantah. so there were endless queues for e tickets when they were distributed. lucky i went on e 1st day (considerin e "tmr lah" mentality of undergrads) n at e earliest time i cld. titus joined me in e queue n conveniently got a ticket.
i heard e last time he had sucha forum, some wise guy thot he cld challenge LKY n ask some politically-incorrect (no pun intended) questions. it created a major hoo-ha n received a strong rebuttal from the man himself. tt guy was also subsequently killed in the media, doin sth tt seems expressive n noble but is widely regarded as impossible in spore. i didnt think this time wld b so controversial. especially if foreigners eventually dominate e QnA session.
being such a regimental Specialist myself i was subconsciously noticing e order of procedure. we were ordered to report one-and-half hour before LKY arrives. there was metallic screenin for everyone; common audience like us were separated from e press, who were e only ones allowed cameras, while we cldnt even bring bags in. when inside, e sternness was unmistakeable. e air had an undercurrent of anxiety. it was like a Communist congress. every few mins, e emcee wld appear to remind us of e magnitude of e event. when e few thousand seats were filled up in e manner they want, it was just right for e man's arrival. his entourage had his wife, his minders, and expectedly his bodyguards. they came in wave by wave, to clear e path n possibly part e seas. when he finally entered, it can be seen that his pace has slowed considerably over e years, but it simply adds to his aura. we were up in salute, but it didnt feel as much a host's welcome as a national reverance.
when e forum was nearin e end, there were tense movements all round. personnel gettin into position, e kind they rehearsed in much detail before. e emcee was timing her move, to end e forum in sync, n his entourage was mechanical in their jobs. but she broke e regimentation. in procedure, content, n argument.
i knew she had such streaks. i was proven right. she told me before e forum when i met her outside that she's here as e press, n that she wont be askin questions or wat. but when a forum goes by with 6 of e 7 questions asked durin QnA by foreigners, even promptin LKY to ask for locals to go to e mic, i cld feel she was comin.
after e moderator ended e QnA. after e emcee walked out. after LKY has stood up. she rushed to e mic, n boomed a voice that took us all aback. it almost felt like blasphemy. she seeked e man to answer one last question from her. it was a keen moment. he cld reject n walk away without much hoo-ha. but i sense he knew this generation of students n media wld expect him to not shy away. however his hesitance is understandable - e aggressive nature of this girl hints at a difficult question.
e Lit major went, "Do you see a natural contradiction in censorship codes and Singapore's efforts to promote artistic expression?"
LKY, "What is the problem you see?"
"For example, at the Singapore Arts Festival, there have been films that were censored to such an extent that the artists decided to withdraw their films from the festival.
So in this case, Singaporeans did not get exposed enough to artistic works, within Singapore."
LKY, "I don't see that as a great deprivation."
"The thing is we can travel out of Singapore..."
LKY, "No, no, you don't have to travel out. They will come. You can see it on the Internet..."
"Yes, but with regard to local artists' creations, there have been impediments because of the censorship code so there's a limit to what we can produce."
LKY, "I just find it unbelievable that your artistic expression...is being suppressed because of the censorship code. It cannot be. What is it you want to say, do, draw, paint?"
"OK, I'm not saying that pornography, for example, will help in artistic expression...Films relating to politics and explicit art are limited."
LKY, "What is explicit art?"
"As in maybe films that depict homosexual roles."
LKY, "Surely you can find expression through many other areas...
The movement is towards a globalised world culture. But we have to retain certain values of our own... Eventually, if that becomes the mainstream, with homosexual acceptance in China, in Taiwan, in Hong Kong, it will come to us. But we will go at a speed which makes our people comfortable. At the moment, if you move in this direction, you're going to make a lot of people unhappy and it's not necessary. Let's treat this in an adult way... If you're born homosexual, then so be it, but must you parade it and must you go out of your way to antagonise, embarrass or defy people with more conventional views? I think it is not necessary."
