i like motion pictures

As a Teochew who grew up speaking the dialect with my grandparents, I found the beauty of 给阿嬷的情书 not in the language. In fact, anecdotally, even many older folks could not fully understand the Teochew used, and relied on subtitles. The film's true strength lies in it taking the ubiquitous story of migrating Chinese, and deftly illustrating the quiet courage, determination and selflessness of our forefathers. It made me remember my grandparents, wonder about their sacrifices, and reflect on how successive generations must not let them down. That is its greatness.
